Alban Jolly, urban landscape designer and founder of the company Urbanflore, has developed a concept of green walls intended for individuals as well as businesses. He explains the principle to us. Interview by Bérangère Larivaud

What is the concept of your green wall?

We start from a metallic structure that we fix on a wall. On this structure, expanded polycarbonate panels are screwed, onto which two layers of irrigation ply made of a rot-proof nonwoven fabric are stapled. A drip system is installed, either in open circuit with a programmer, or in closed circuit with a pump. Then, we incise the first layer of irrigation water and we insert a small pocket containing a plant, which we staple. Regarding the choice of plants, it depends on the exposure, the ceiling height, because the closer the plant is to the ground, the more humid it will be. Indoors, we generally choose from a wide range of tropical plants. Outdoors, you can put almost anything, except lignified plants like roses, and avoid deciduous.

What are the major constraints for installing a green wall at home?

The first constraint is light. If the place where the person wants to install their green wall is more than three meters from a natural light source, artificial lights must be installed. Then add water when necessary. In a closed circuit, you should bring water once every two or three weeks approximately. Another solution is to use stabilized plants, that is to say plants whose sap has been replaced by glycerin. They look like fresh flowers but require no maintenance and can last for ten years.

How much does it cost ?

It takes between 400 and 500 euros per m² for an open circuit, and between 500 and 600 euros in a closed circuit.

Does a green wall have an ecological impact?

Absolutely. It allows plants to be brought where there are none. It is therefore a supply of oxygen and also of biodiversity, if the wall is located outside. Inside, we make sure to plant between a third and two thirds of plants known for their depolluting properties. They fix air particles such as formaldehydes or benzene, which are found in residues of paints, adhesives, in agglomerated furniture, etc. The air in the room is purified.
